Cairns Doctors Attract Tourists

AUSTRALIA will become the largest source of medical second opinions in the Asia-Pacific region, a conference in Cairns heard yesterday.

The message came from Dr Wei Siang Yu, founder of the Fly Free for Health Group of Companies in Singapore. He was speaking at the inaugural health and wellness conference at the Shangri-La Hotel and organised by the Australian Tourism Export Council.

Dr Wei said Australia had the advantage of being in the same time zone as many Asian countries, was the only Western country in the region and had a high-standard of medical services.

“Australia is surrounded by Asian countries where people want a second opinion before acting,” he said. “They want something from an Eastern perspective but they want a Western one as well.”

Dr Wei said Cairns was an ideal health location, as the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest were ideal for a recovery. Family members could also enjoy a Cairns holiday while their relative received treatment, he said. Dr Wei said the internet meant greater opportunities for Australian doctors to network with Asian counterparts.

The conference attracted more than 60 delegates and a range of Australian and international speakers.
