Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment uses oxygen at a level higher pressure to treat certain types of infection and conditions.
It uses a special chamber, sometimes called a pressure chamber, to achieve therapeutic effect. The air pressure inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is about two and a half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere. This helps the blood carry more oxygen to organs and tissues in the body. Hyperbaric therapy is believed to help wounds, especially infected wounds, heal more quickly.
HBOT may be used in managing cases like diabetic gangrene, air embolism, and osteomyelitis. Also, there have been documented uses of HBOT in unexpected medical cases. These include autism, some forms of hearing loss, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Treatments for chronic conditions may be repeated over days or weeks. A treatment session for more acute conditions such as decompression sickness may be longer but not necessarily repeated. Patients may opt for HBOT to be done electively, or as needed.
